"Hayup Ka" Open-Letter to Janet Napoles by Prof. Joselito D. Delos Reyes

Dear Janet,

At pipilitin mong magkagulo.

May oras at araw kayo.

Ang mahuli at maparusahan ka kasama ng iyong minions will make this world a better place.

Joselito D. Delos Reyes

Yari tayo.

Actress-politician Lani Mercado on proposal to scrap pork barrel: “Basta huwag lang manghihingi sa amin ang mga tao!”

Actress-politician Lani Mercado on proposal to scrap pork barrel: “Basta huwag lang manghihingi sa amin ang mga tao!”

PORK BARREL.

Parang mahirap yatang mangyari yun?

“E, anong ibibigay namin?” balik-tanong niya.

Napoles lawyer on ‘missing’ client: Lacson did hide, too

Commentary:

Lawyers are considered agents of the court and must be one with the Justice Department in making sure that justice is served. That is why it is disheartening to hear a lawyer justify her client's hiding from the authorities.

News Story:

Legal counsel Lorna Kapunan on Thursday said her client Janet Lim-Napoles’ decision to go into hiding is human nature, saying even Senator Panfilo Lacson had done it.

“I think it is human nature that when you have a warrant of arrest and you are in a state of confusion, you go into hiding,” Kapunan said in an interview with Radyo Inquirer 990AM.

She said Napoles should not be blamed because of the “suspicious way it was done.”

“If it were me and [Secretary De Lima] will tell me that ‘we will treat you fairly’ then the very next day there is a warrant of arrest under suspicious circumstances, will you surrender?” Napoles’ counsel said.

Kapunan even cited the case of Lacson who fled the country in 2010 in relation to the Dacer-Corbit double murder case.

Kazakhstan is a dangerous team, says Gilas Pilipinas coach

Philippine team head coach Chot Reyes said it again, Kazakhstan, the Filipinos’ next target, is a dangerous team.

Even before the tournament started, Reyes has been wary of Kazakhstan, and he knows it’s going to take their “best” to cross out the Kazakhs as they figure in make-or-break quarterfinals tiff on Friday.

They face each other at 8:30 p.m. as the knockout phase of the 27th Fiba Asia Championships begins.
Kazakhstan, though, hasn’t showcased its best self yet in the Asian Championships, taking tough blows from contenders Iran, 53-85, and Korea, 47-71.

The Kazakhs’ most impressive game was in a 67-73 setback to a China squad which likewise didn’t have a great preliminary round.

New Twist in Chito Miranda and Neri Naig Scandal - Did Chito's Son Upload the Video

The web is on fire again after an FB post purportedly from Chito Miranda's son became viral. In the post, shown below, an FB user with the name Alfonso Yanga Miranda, claimed responsibility for uploading the video.

But aside from asking if the claim is indeed true, the most important question is the authenticity of the person behind the account. As far as the public is concerned, Chito Miranda has no children. So there is a big chance that this is just a hoax.

Another interesting thing in the FB posts by Alfonso Yanga Miranda is his repeated mention of a certain Ate Lirah, who was supposed to be Chito's ex GF. Fashion Police got these pictures, supposedly of Ate Lirah. you be the judge:

Enrile caught playing 'Bejeweled' at Senate hearing

Commentary:

First it was solitaire for lowly office clerks, but now it's Bejeweled for high ranking officials. On the other hand, if these people can waste billions of pesos in people's money, how much more a few hours of office time?

News Story:

During a lull in a Senate inquiry on the alleged sex-for-flight scheme on Thursday morning, Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile was found busy tinkering with his iPad. Howerver, he was not poring over government documents, nor researching the serious topic at hand.
He was actually playing 'Bejeweled.'
In an interview after the hearing, the 89-year-old senator proudly told reporters that he was already on Level 271 of the popular tile-matching game, and has already earned seven million points.
"Hindi naman bawal iyan. It exercises your mind. Marami riyan. You can even play poker," the senator said.

Congress leaders defy Aquino order

Comment:

While PNOY is trying to control the whole government - either by issuing policies or appointing his people to key positions - expect the other branches of the government to fight back. This is especially true when the issue is money. Or pork barrel. Or PDAF. Or JDF.

News Story:

ADMINISTRATION allies in the House and Senate said Sunday they would defy President Benigno Aquino III’s bid to seize control of co-equal branches of government by stripping the Judiciary of its fiscal autonomy and by taking away Congress’ power of the purse in the 2014 budget.

Senator Francis Escudero, chairman of the Senate committee on finance, and his counterpart in the House, Davao City Rep. Isidro Ungab, chairman of the House committee on appropriations, said they would study the Palace-proposed special provisions carefully to see if there was a legal basis for stripping the Supreme Court of its control over the P7 billion Judiciary Development Fund and P2.5 billion in allocations for unfilled positions.

Philippines wary of Cloud-based computer donation from China firm Huawei

chinese computers

Commentary:

Not worth the trouble. Send these computer back to China, or better, bring them to Panatag Shoal for use as base for corals. It is not as if we will be declining a multi-billion aid from China, 50 computers will not even make a tiny dent on the shortage of computers in our public school system.

News Story:

The education department has expressed concern over a computer donation given by Huawei, following recent reports that the Chinese firm is using a programme that could be used for espionage.
“We consider this a serious matter and we will look into this and study the matter very well before we do anything,” Mario Deriquito of the Department of Education was quoted as saying following reports that Huawei Technologies had “engaged in espionage on behalf of the Chinese state.”
Huawei, which manufactures telecom and computer products, had recently signed and partly fulfilled an agreement for the supply of 50 computers for the DepEd under a donation covenant worth P8 million (Dh671,900).
An initial 16 computers and a server had been delivered and installed by Huawei to the Tambubong Elementary School in San Rafael, Bulacan in Central Luzon while the remaining balance from the 50 units will be supplied later. The computers will be running on a Cloud-based system.

Boxing-I still have two or three years left, says Pacquiao

Comment:

I don't think he has anything left if he lose to Rios in their upcoming fight. Win convincingly and we'll closer to a Pacquiao vs Mayweather fight.

Get knocked out again and we are closer to "PACQUIAO for PRESIDENT".

Pacquiao - I still have two or three years left

Eight-weight world champion Manny Pacquiao believes he has two or three years of fighting left before he quits the sport and still retains the hope of securing a bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Two straight defeats, the second a brutal sixth round knockout by old foe Juan Manuel Marquez in December, prompted pundits and fans to suggest retirement for the 34-year-old Filipino.
But he will step back in the ring after an extended break on Nov. 24 to take on American Brandon Rios for a first fight in Macau, keen to re-establish himself as the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.

Aquino declares August 9 a holiday

Commentary:

August 9 is Regular Holiday. Lucky day for all permanent employees and students - no work and no classes. Unlucky day for non-permanent employees - no salary. It's a long weekend again, more time for you to get a  life (no, chatting with your FB friends and updating your status every 30 minutes don't count as "real" life).

News Story:

It will be a long weekend and families and friends will have extra time for bonding as President Benigno Aquino III signed Proclamation No. 629-2013 declaring August 9, Friday, a regular holiday.
The declaration came as the Muslim holy month of Ramadhan ends with the
Eid’l Fitr or the celebration of the Feast of Ramadhan. The holiday in this Catholic-dominated country aims to “promote cultural understanding and integration,” Malacañang said.
Lanao Muslim Traders Association president Mac Bitiarra told Sun.Star Pampanga that in the City of San Fernando, hundreds of Muslims from different communities will troop to their mosque in Barangay San Pedro Cutud for the feast as they do annually.
Other holidays this month, per Proclamation No. 459-2012 are Ninoy Aquino Day on August 21 (Wednesday), which is a special non-working holiday and August 26 (Monday), National Heroes Day, another regular holiday.

President Aquino wants PDAF to stay - Valte

Comment:

This isn't surprising news at all. PNoy needs PDAF to keep congressmen and senators inline. Without the multi-million pork barrel, the president won't have anything to entice our lawmakers into supporting his agenda.

The only surprising thing is why we, the people, even entertained the notion that the pork barrel will be scrapped. Are we that gullible?

News Story

President Aquino wants PDAF to stay - Valte

As lawmakers debate over the proposed abolition of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), President Benigno Aquino III has made his stand on the matter clear: He wants pork to stay.

"Parang ganoon po yung nakuha ko rin sa conversation namin ng pangulo [It's also the idea I got in our conversation with the president]," Undersecretary Abigail Valte, deputy presidential spokesperson, said.

President Aquino was a lawmaker for 18 years. It was likely that it was during that period when he realized that projects at the local level were better left under the auspices of lawmakers who were more familiar with the needs of their constituents.

Philippine journalist gunned down

Comment:

Being a journalist is really not good for your health, especially if you are living in the Philippines. While we are so proud of how we are the most democratic country in Asia, our journalists are getting killed one by one.

This is another sad news for journalists around the world...

News Story

Philippine journalist gunned down

Three journalists have been gunned down in the Philippines in its worst spate of media killings in nearly four years.
Police and rights watchdogs say the latest victim, freelance news photographer Mario Sy, was killed in front of his wife and child by two suspects who broke into his home in the southern city of General Santos.
The attack followed the shooting deaths in Manila on Tuesday of two columnists of a tabloid that had recently ceased publication, said Rupert Mangilit, secretary-general of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines.
"We're quite alarmed that despite claims that the environment for journalists is safer now, we have three killings happening in a week," he told AFP.

Abu Sayyaf militants release two hostages in Philippines

Twitter, Washington Post targeted by hackers

Social media giant Twitter is among the latest U.S. companies to report that it is among a growing list of victims of Internet security attacks, saying that hackers may have gained access to information on 250,000 of its more than 200 million active users. And now, The Washington Post is joining the chorus, revealing the discovery of a sophisticated cyberattack in 2011.
Twitter said in a blog post on Friday it detected attempts to gain access to its user data earlier in the week. It shut down one attack moments after it was detected.
But Twitter discovered that the attackers may have stolen user names, email addresses and encrypted passwords belonging to 250,000 users they describe as "a very small percentage of our users." The company reset the pilfered passwords and sent emails advising the affected users.

Chinese navy fleet enters West Phl Sea

A Chinese navy fleet entered the South China Sea on Friday for patrols and drills after passing through the Bashi Channel, state media in Beijing said, quoting military sources, as tensions with neighbors over disputed waters remain high.
The official Xinhua news agency reported the navy fleet that included three Chinese warships entered the South China Sea at 03:40 GMT after five hours sailing to pass through the Bashi Channel.
The Bashi Channel, situated between Taiwan and the Philippines’ Luzon island, is an international sea route connecting the South China Sea (West Philippine Sea) and the Pacific Ocean.

Bishop accuses Comelec of ‘stonewalling’ on PCOS

A Catholic bishop on Saturday accused the Commission on Elections (Comelec) of repeatedly “stonewalling” when questions are raised about the integrity of the precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines that will be used in the May 2013 automated elections.
Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo cited in particular the warnings from the election watchdog Automated Election System (AES) Watch that “wholesale cheating” could occur with the use of the PCOS machines.
AES Watch and Comelec Chair Sixto Brillantes Jr. gave a briefing for the bishops in a plenary session last month but Pabillo said the Comelec chief left them with more questions than answers.
According to the bishop, even with the elections now being completely automated, he has received information that so-called “election operators” were asking for P20 million to “fix” a provincial gubernatorial race and P70 million for a mayoralty race in Metro Manila.

No problems in mock polls, says Brillantes

There were some glitches but no major problems.
Comelec Chair Sixto Brillantes Jr. acknowledged only “minor” problems in the dry run for the May 2013 elections that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) conducted on Saturday in 10 selected areas across the country.
The glitches mainly involved the precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machines not starting immediately or paper ballots jamming.
“We saw no major problem. We had some initial minor problems but everything has settled down,” Brillantes told a press conference at P. Bernardo High School in Quezon City, one of the main voting centers.
“It’s speculative but maybe since the PCOS machines were last used in the 2010 elections, or two-and-a-half years ago, we needed to heat them up a bit,” he said.
Eric Alvia, secretary general of the election watchdog National Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel), had a more extensive list that included conflicting voters’ lists, PCOS machines with missing clips, rollers that did not work, technical staff who did not report early and low turnout.
